Little Snitch being a security product by default disables GUI Scripting of itself (to prevent an app being able to disable it), Bartender 3 uses this to control the menu items, we do not want to bypass this control so instead have a message to users of Little Snitch letting them know what they can do: Enable GUI Scripting in Little Snitch,. Little Snitch's UI has received a complete overhaul, offering tools to search and filter rules and a new Network Monitor to watch network traffic in real time. Bundle seats are also available. The Internet is a terrifying place, and Objective Development's Little Snitch 4 ($45) has tried for many years to help keep your Mac locked down by monitoring connections and letting you control. That's not necessarily true. The article mentions this. While ObDev still doesn't have all the APIs necessary to implement all the features of Little Snitch using NetworkExtensions, they are working on it with Apple and feature-parity is not expected to be an issue for the 10.16 release.

With regard to the need for Sophos, see my Mac Malware Guide. There is Mac malware out there, and Sophos will protect you against it quite well, but Mac OS X does a pretty good job itself as well. One class of borderline malware - called adware - is becoming increasingly common, but most of it is not blocked by either Sophos or Mac OS X, unfortunately. Thus it's more important to know how to protect yourself.

Little Snitch is a mixed bag. On the one hand, there has been malware that short-circuited its own install process if Little Snitch was present.. thus, just having Little Snitch installed prevented installation, because the hackers behind the malware knew that Little Snitch would prevent it from working properly. On the other hand, some malware has been known to completely disable Little Snitch and go on with its malicious business unimpeded.

None of this malware is still viable, due to updates to Mac OS X. However, because of the possibility of the latter, Little Snitch cannot be relied on. If the malware is already running on your machine, it's too late for something like Little Snitch to be a reliable way of blocking outbound connections. If you choose to use Little Snitch with full knowledge of this limitation, that's fine.

Objective Development has a great concept with Little Snitch: Mac OS X comes with a solid firewall built in and most of its ports turned off out of the box, but it doesn't really have any decent tools for monitoring and throttling your Mac's outbound traffic. Little Snitch solves this problem by acting as a highly configurable toll booth, allowing you to set very specific rules to govern which kinds of outbound traffic can be sent by your applications. Want to deny Firefox access to port 80 and force it to only use https (port 443)? Or perhaps you would simply like to be notified whenever any of your applications make any kind of request on your network or the web? Little Snitch's watchful eye might just be the thing for you, and the new features in the version 2.0 beta should make it even more appealing.

As if its all this customizability isn't enough already, Objective Development is focusing on providing even more control over behavior and network visualization with this new version. Little Snitch's UI has received a complete overhaul, offering tools to search and filter rules and a new Network Monitor to watch network traffic in real time. The connection alerts—one of my pet peeves about Little Snitch—are also getting a boost with keyboard shortcuts that should make it easier to allow or deny traffic on a per-connection basis. My peeve stems largely from the fact that, by default, Little Snitch seems to deny just about any connection from an app you haven't set up custom rules for. For example: While drafting this post, I received an alert from Little Snitch when clicking on a link in NetNewsWire, my favorite RSS reader. While I can understand this caution given Little Snitch's purpose in life, I still wish there was some sort of UI for managing or adding batches of rules that allow connections from, say, apps that are currently running.
